Municipalization
The Municipalization of local energy utilities can be broadly defined as a process by which local governments take responsibility for their own energy supplies, much the same way local governments are responsible for providing safe and adequate water supplies, waste disposal, public safety, and other essential services.

How cities choose to discharge their responsibilities will vary, with some cities continuing to rely on private companies to provide some or all aspects of this service. The scope of what a city may choose to undertake on its own can range from hosting distributed generation to muni lite, greenfield municipalization, or the full-scale “buy out” of the incumbent utility provider.
