COGENERATION

For clients who require steam, chilled water, electricity and other energy forms, we provide comprehensive cogeneration services. We have considerable experience in preparing feasibility studies, planning and constructing new or replacement facilities, and operating and maintaining existing plants.

Planning and Construction
We assist our clients in planning for the construction of new and replacement energy production facilities. In addition, we assist in renovating and modifying existing facilities. In doing so, we work to answer the bigger questions: What fuels should be used? What energy forms should be produced? What approach should be taken to address environmental issues? How will electric industry restructuring affect the facility?

Once planning is complete, we work with clients to ensure that plants are constructed as designed and operate as intended. We frequently act as "owner's representative" interacting with construction, engineering, and equipment contractors.

Fuel Procurement
Because cogeneration facilities are sophisticated process plants with both fuel inputs and diverse energy outputs, our services integrate our fuel supply and energy supply planning efforts with facilities planning to achieve low total costs at acceptable risk levels.

Fuel is the largest single cost item over the life of a project, even exceeding the up-front capital cost. Much of our planning, therefore, focuses on fuel cost. We determine which fuels should be used, project fuel prices, and often procure fuel for our clients. We also evaluate fuel inventory and storage requirements.

Environmental Constraints
Although cogeneration's environmental benefits are considerable, increasingly stringent air emissions requirements make it difficult to site and permit even energy efficient facilities. So clients can use fuels cost-effectively, we combine regulatory compliance approaches with emission control technologies. We prepare environmental compliance plans for new and existing facilities, and we also assist our clients in obtaining environmental permits.
